Our Story

Tabula Rasa Inc., meaning “a slate that has been blanked,” reflects our belief in the human capacity for renewal. We recognize that individuals are not defined by their past experiences. Instead, each person holds the ability to begin again, rewrite their story, and move toward a life shaped by intention, resilience, and hope.

At Tabula Rasa Inc., we empower individuals to develop awareness and ownership of their thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and behaviors. This process fosters personal growth, supports emotional healing, and promotes lasting change. By creating space for reflection, discovery, and forward movement, we help individuals redefine their future and build lives grounded in stability, wellness, and possibility.

  Services

 Tabula Rasa Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making Client Centered healing and personal growth accessible through a range of integrative, evidence-based therapeutic approaches. Our services include Traditional Psychotherapy and assessment, Telehealth services, Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy, Growth & Learning Activities, Animal-Assisted Treatment and Interventions, Wilderness Walk and Talk. Each service is grounded in a client-centered, integrative model utilizing Evidence Based Practice designed to meet individuals where they are and support meaningful, lasting change.

We offer personalized services for individuals ages 13 and older, as well as support for couples. When appropriate, we also provide small group and family sessions. These offerings create safe, supportive spaces where individuals, families, and groups can heal, build trust, strengthen relationships, and explore new paths toward emotional health and overall well-being.

All services are led by a Doctor of Clinical Psychology (PsyD) who is trained and certified in a myriad of modalities and approaches with the understanding that no two individuals are the same. She is trained and certified in traditional psychotherapy services, testing and assessment, the use of horses and other animals, as well as certified in integrative therapeutic approaches to facilitate growth and healing.

Psychotherapy is a deeply personal process that involves exploring thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and behaviors to develop insight, strengthen coping skills, and support positive change. When appropriate this work is combined with the integrative presence of animals and nature, and clients are offered a unique and powerful opportunity for transformation.

Through Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP), Growth and Learning (G&L), Animal-Assisted Treatment and Interventions (AAT-I), and Wilderness Walk and Talk, clients engage in meaningful experiential activities that extend beyond traditional talk therapy. These experiences may include guided therapeutic exercises, opportunities for reflection, and hands-on learning that support the development of communication, trust, emotional awareness, and healthy relationship patterns.

These services support healing of the mind, body, and spirit. Clients learn skills to regulate emotions, manage thoughts and perceptions, and make intentional behavioral choices. Within a safe and supportive environment, individuals are encouraged to engage in self-reflection while building confidence, self-acceptance, accountability, assertiveness, discipline, integrity, responsibility, and trust. In addition, our programs support the development of communication and social skills that strengthen relationships and foster personal growth. Clients practice empathy, patience, teamwork, leadership, respect, kindness, and advocacy, all essential foundations for meaningful connection and long-term well-being.

~~~~~ CISD ~~~~~
We are also committed to supporting our first responder communities by providing Critical Incident Stress Debriefings (CISD) following difficult or traumatic events experienced in the line of duty.
These services are designed to offer timely, structured support that acknowledges the unique demands and emotional impact of first response work.
Our CISD team is composed of our Doctor of Clinical Psychology, and current and/or retired first responders from a variety of disciplines who are certified in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). Their shared professional experience fosters credibility, trust, and a deep understanding of the operational and emotional realities faced by those serving in emergency response roles.
CISD sessions are offered to agencies following a critical incident and are typically conducted at participating service sites or headquarters, or can be held in our rapid city location. Holding debriefings in familiar or neutral environments helps create a supportive and accessible setting where responders can reflect on the event together. During these sessions, participants are provided space to process their experiences, recognize common stress responses, and learn practical strategies for self-care and peer support.
Our goal is to help reduce the potential long-term emotional and psychological impact of critical incidents. By supporting early processing, resilience, and connection among team members, we aim to promote overall well-being and help first responders continue serving their communities with strength, clarity, and compassion.
Our Doctor
Dr. Peterson carries forward a legacy of healing rooted in generations of connection between people, animals, and the natural world. Her great-grandfather was known for helping others through the profound relationships he cultivated with horses, guided by intuition, respect, and lived experience. That tradition of relational healing, grounded in deep reverence for animals and the wisdom passed through generations, continues to inspire her work today.
While honoring this legacy, Dr. Peterson integrates it with modern psychological science and evidence-based care. Her approach combines contemporary clinical expertise with holistic, person-centered practices that recognize the interconnectedness of mind, body, relationships, and environment.
Dr. Peterson earned her Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology and has completed extensive advanced training to provide comprehensive, integrative mental health care. She is a Certified Animal-Assisted Therapy Interventionist (AAT-I), Certified Equine Assisted Professional (CEAP), and Certified Integrative Mental Health Professional (CIMHP). She is also Certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (CDBT), trained in Adaptive DBT, Certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CCBT), and Certified in Critical Incident Stress Management (CCISM). Additionally, she is trained to provide Critical Incident Stress Debriefings (CISD) for first responders in both individual and group settings.
Her commitment to lifelong learning is reflected in ongoing advanced training across a broad range of specialties, including Complex PTSD, the neurobiology of trauma, integrative and nutritional psychiatry, culinary and lifestyle medicine for mental health, mindfulness-based interventions for anxiety, cravings, and habit change, and evidence-informed approaches to cultivating resilience, awe, and well-being. She has also completed specialized training in culturally responsive care, including supporting Native American youth at risk for suicide, and remains committed to providing compassionate, culturally informed care that honors each individual's strengths, history, and lived experience.
Dr. Peterson's therapeutic philosophy is rooted in the belief that healing occurs through meaningful relationships; with ourselves, with others, with animals, and with the natural world. By integrating traditional psychotherapy with evidence-based, experiential, and holistic approaches, she helps individuals develop insight, strengthen resilience, and create lasting, meaningful change.
